Sweats for Vets
About
Unfortunately, there is a hidden disease that plagues our country’s heroes and warriors: neglect. My name is Hunter Magher and in the years past I have spent time in voluntary service at organizations like Glide Memorial Church and St. Anthony’s, where a large majority of impoverished visitors were veterans. It was during these volunteer visits that I began to cultivate a passion for helping the people who risked their lives for our country. I started by volunteering at the VA hospital for the last few weeks of summer. During my time at the VA I worked in a department called the Veterans Experience Center where Vets can get their basic needs met on a daily basis. While the VEC was doing a terrific job with the little staff they had, there were still large deficiencies with very basic daily items like clothes. After my time at the VA was over I knew that I had to provide assistance to the friends that I had made in the VEC like Bill and Valeria. So, I came up with the idea of donating new sweatshirts and sweatpants to veterans as small tokens of appreciation towards their unimaginable sacrifice in the hope that they start to feel less ignored by our society. This voluntary service is called Sweats For Vets.

In less than two months, Sweats for Vets received total donations of $18,500 which allowed us to purchase 550 new sweatpants and 570 sweatshirts for our veterans (almost triple my initial goal of 200 of each). I am so grateful for all of the support shown to our veterans and to this fundraiser. I look forward to furthering this campaign in the future with more opportunities to donate basic supplies to our veterans. Remember, we are the Land of the Free because of the Brave.

Sincerely,

Hunter Magher
